Ribbons are usually awarded to mark an achievement, such as winning or being highly placed in an equestrian event, dog show, cat show, rabbit show etc.. The ribbons usually have a pin or fastener so the award can be attached to clothing, walls, or other surfaces. Award ribbons can be just a flat length of ribbon, a flat-folded ribbon, or constructed as rosettes. A rosette is pleated ribbon that is arranged in a circle to resemble a rose, usually with tail or streamer ribbons attached. Rosettes are usually printed with details of the award, the event, the place (such as first place, second place), and the date.

Frequently awarded for up to the top six placings in a class at equestrian show events, the ribbon / rosette colour used varies from country to country. There is a list of country colours here.
